Kati Torda is a Hungarian-born artist who has lived more than half her life in Ghana. There she touched upon a fading bead culture and successfully initiated a new consciousness of it. She has combined the cultural heritage of her two homes to create internationally celebrated beadwork that reflects her considerable knowledge of Ghanaian and other West African bead traditions, her own fierce eclecticism and the dynamic mix of cross-cultural influence that inform contemporary African art.
Kati is a founding member of the Ghana Bead Society. In addition to making Ghana's rich bead history accessible to a broad range of people, she promotes local bead producers by exposing their products on both national and international markets. Her own creations have been worn for the past seven years by Miss Ghana, Miss Universe and Miss World contestants and have appeared on models competing in Elle's Face of Africa competition.
Kati is well respected among the custodians of Ghana's bead history and culture. Her extensive knowledge and creative talent have made her one of Ghana's foremost bead experts and sought after designers. She is the author of a book about bead culture published by Unesco.
